You worked on this manuscript for months, maybe years. Then you finally hit send and handed it over to an editor. Now you're checking your inbox, wondering what's happening with your manuscript and how long you're supposed to wait before you hear anything.

Six to eight weeks, for most manuscripts. Eight to twelve if yours runs long or gets complicated. What's more important is what's actually happening during those weeks.

The Two-Read Process

I don't read your manuscript once and start typing notes. I read it twice.

The first pass is a cold read, straight through, the way a reader would experience it. I do jot down a few notes along the way, only from a reader's perspective: a moment I didn't understand, a line where I don't believe the character would actually say or do that. I'm not analyzing craft yet. I'm just finding out how the story works and where it snags.

The second pass is where I do the structural work. I go back through it with full inline comments, tracked changes, and structural analysis, building the complete picture of what's working and what needs attention. That's the two-pass structure. It's why the timeline holds steady, even when I want to get you feedback faster. I want to know how the story lands before I start taking it apart.

What Moves the Timeline

Two things stretch a developmental edit past that six-to-eight-week baseline: length and difficulty. A three-hundred-page novel and a six-hundred-page one are not the same job. Neither are a straightforward single-POV story and a manuscript juggling dual timelines, multiple POVs, or several subplots. When either of those is true, I build in extra time so the evaluation gets the attention it needs.

What You're Doing While I'm Reading

You're not just waiting. While I'm working through your manuscript, I ask you to build an Inside Outline. It's a scene-by-scene breakdown of how the story is currently written, a tool from Jennie Nash and Author Accelerator that I use with every client.

This isn't busywork. I teach you how to use the Inside Outline as a diagnostic tool, not just an assignment to turn in. Once you know how to build one, you can spot your own plot holes and breaks in the cause-and-effect chain. That's a skill you keep long after this manuscript is done.

I pair it with the Mini Blueprint, also from Author Accelerator, which asks a writer to name the point of their story, their target reader, and their genre, among other important elements. It works like a mirror, showing me where a writer's sense of their own story doesn't fully line up yet, which is often where the revision work needs to start.

We're working in parallel. By the time we get on our call, you'll already have a head start on the conversation, and tools you can keep using long after this manuscript is done.

That's a lot to take in at once, so I don't expect you to act on it immediately. Read it once, then sit with it for four or five days. Read it again, take notes, write down your questions, and send them to me before our call. That way, when we talk, I'm not walking you through the report cold. I'm answering the questions you've already had time to form, and we use the ninety minutes for the conversation that moves your revision forward.

Is the Timeline Ever Flexible?

The two-read process is pretty firm. It's what makes the feedback reliable, and I'm not willing to shortcut it just to hand you something faster. What can shift the timeline is the manuscript itself: a shorter or more straightforward story moves faster, a longer or more tangled one takes more time.

The one thing that helps is the Inside Outline. When I can see your story at a glance before I even start the cold read, I catch continuity issues faster and the whole process runs more smoothly on both ends.
